Better Banked or Unbanked

So, true story here. I and some of my staff attended a half day symposium on ‘the state of cannabis and banking’ in Colorado. The audience was composed of mostly bankers. This was a while back, but a story that deserves repeating.

After hearing presentations to include emphasis on people jumping from windows, increasing crime, lack of law enforcement to compensate for legalization and, oh benefit to law enforcement, the federal reports being filed by financial institutions and helping law enforcement track money all over the country….it was time for Q & A!

Only one or two financial institutions in that room were actually banking the industry at that time. Since there seemed to be an underlying theme on this panel to scare the audience away from banking the industry, I felt the need to ask a few clarifying questions. For the most part, my questions were met with ‘Oh, we know who you are and what you do’. I was not ashamed of banking the industry (that train had left the station!), but learned early on that staying at the office and keeping my head down was less confrontational as well as the path of least resistance. I had enough resistance to worry about. Why invite more?

My final question to one of the agents was ‘is the money better banked or unbanked’? Isn’t that what it boils down to in the end? Does society benefit with cannabis money being transparent and accounted for in the financial system more than if the money is being stored in neighborhoods, trunks of cars, backpacks and the businesses next door? Well, that was a question to ponder and ponder he did….

The agent to whom I directed this question stammered a bit, looked down, fidgeted and finally answered the question, still with head bowed low…. ‘Here’s the thing, said he, if you start banking marijuana, it’s only a matter of time before you start banking proceeds from heroin, morphine, cocaine and other illegal drugs’. Really, I thought and later asked my staff, ‘Is cannabis the gateway drug to BANKING BAD?

Well, if that didn’t just further stigmatize what we were doing to bank the industry for safety. Here is the problem as I see it, people buy into this rhetoric coming from leadership. They forget what banking means to community, economics and business. Banking Cannabis is NOT about helping the industry flourish to me!!! It’s about safety, accountability and protecting the financial system… we considered several factors prior to moving into this space to include:
